In 2007, Sarasota County adopted a new ordinance to restrict the use of Nitrogen fertilizer (an element existing in most fertilizers) during the months of June thru September. In 2008, Charlotte County followed suit and in 2009 Lee County did the same.
This new law (Ordinance #2007-062) was designed to reduced the amount of Nitrogen runoff into our rivers, lakes and coastal water zones. At that time, Nitrogen fertilizer was being blamed for massive algae blooms and red tide.
For many pest control professionals, including our Problem Solved Pest Control, these methods were already in place. The summer months are known as the “GROWING SEASON.” Nitrogen, being an element that promotes vigorous growth, was primarily utilized in areas that were under stress due to drought or other stressers. Over use of nitrogen is irresponsible and just makes the mower angry!
For us, not much changed. We still fertilize thru the rainy season but our fertilizers are custom-blended and have been for years. We supply different sources of Iron to promote nice GREEN color. Potash is also a great ingredient. Some companies sell it as an extra-charge but we include it to strengthen your lawn’s root structure.
Potassium is applied to allow our turf grass to more efficiently uptake water and nutrients. This, in turn, limits stress on the lawn and encourages recovery when needed.
For anyone thinking of possibly installing some new turf or landscaping, we are granted a 60 day variance which allows us to use all of the necessary ingredients (nitrogen, additional watering) it takes to establish new plantings.
