What Are Chinch Bugs?

Chinch bugs are small insects that thrive in thick turf such as lawns and golf courses. Their feeding habits cause significant damage, especially during dry, hot seasons. Dead or dying patches in your lawn may signal a chinch bug infestation.

They overwinter as adults in debris, thatch, and crevices. Once temperatures reach around 70°F, they begin mating. Females can lay up to 500 eggs, which hatch into bright red, wingless nymphs that feed voraciously on grass roots.

Life Cycle & Behavior

Chinch bugs generally produce two generations per year. Each generation feeds on grass for about 40–50 days before maturing into adults capable of flight. The first generation is most active from mid-summer through early fall, while the second generation overwinters in soil or clippings.

Chinch Bugs in Florida Lawns

In Florida, chinch bugs are one of the most common lawn pests, especially in St. Augustine grass. They thrive in warm, dry conditions and can spread quickly if untreated. Their feeding causes yellowing patches that eventually turn brown and die, mimicking drought stress.

Regular monitoring and early intervention are key to preventing severe lawn damage. A professional inspection can confirm chinch bug activity and provide an appropriate treatment plan.
