Earwigs
Earwigs are nocturnal insects that thrive in Florida’s warm, humid environments. Learn how to identify and prevent infestations with expert pest control from Problem Solved Pest Control.
What Are Earwigs?
Earwigs belong to the insect order Dermaptera and can be found throughout the Americas, Africa, Eurasia, and Australia. With about 2,000 species worldwide, they are recognized by their distinctive pincers (cerci) located on their abdomens. Their name comes from the old superstition that they crawl into human ears — a myth, of course!
Earwigs are nocturnal and prefer moist, dark places during the day. At night, they come out to feed on small insects and plants, sometimes causing minor damage to gardens, flowers, and crops.
Earwigs in Florida
The common earwig was introduced to North America in the early 1900s and is now widespread in southern states like Florida. They are often found in mulch beds, under rocks, or inside damp crevices around homes. While they rarely fly, they can move quickly and seek shelter indoors when outdoor conditions are too dry or hot.
Although earwigs are generally harmless, large infestations can become a nuisance. Their presence indoors usually signals excessive moisture or decaying organic matter nearby.
How to Prevent Earwigs
- Reduce outdoor moisture by fixing leaks and ensuring proper drainage.
- Keep mulch and vegetation trimmed away from your home’s foundation.
- Seal cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and vents.
- Use dehumidifiers in damp basements or crawl spaces.
- Schedule regular pest inspections for early detection and prevention.
