Silverfish
Silverfish are small, wingless insects that thrive in humid Florida environments. Learn how to identify and prevent infestations in your home or business.
What Are Silverfish?
Silverfish, or fishmoths, belong to the order Thysanura. Their name comes from their silvery-grey color and fish-like movement. Measuring 13–30 mm long, they are wingless and have a tapered abdomen that enhances their fish-like appearance.
They feed primarily on carbohydrates such as sugars and starches, making them a threat to books, wallpaper, clothing, and stored food products.
Habitat & Behavior
Silverfish are nocturnal and prefer dark, humid environments such as bathrooms, attics, basements, and kitchens. They move quickly and can live up to eight years. Their small size allows them to hide in cracks and crevices, making infestations difficult to detect.
- Most active at night, avoiding light and movement.
- Feed on starchy materials like paper, glue, and fabric.
- Often found in humid, warm areas with poor ventilation.
- Can survive long periods without food but need moisture to live.
