White Grubs
White grubs are the larval stage of several beetle species and are among the most destructive pests for lawns and turf. Learn how to identify and control them effectively.
What Are White Grubs?
White grubs are the larvae of various beetles including the Japanese beetle, oriental beetle, northern masked chafer, European chafer, and Asiatic garden beetle. These C-shaped larvae live underground and feed on the root systems of grass and plants, leading to extensive turf damage.
Grub damage begins with turf turning a bluish or wilted color, followed by death of the grass stand. Severely damaged turf can be easily rolled back like a carpet, often revealing the grubs beneath.
Grub Life Cycle
Understanding the life cycle of white grubs is essential for effective control. Newly hatched grubs are typically seen in late July through early August. They go through three developmental stages (instars) before reaching adulthood.
- Eggs hatch in midsummer, and larvae immediately begin feeding on grass roots.
- By October, grubs reach their third instar and cause the most damage.
- As temperatures drop, they move deeper into the soil to overwinter.
- In spring, they resurface to feed again before pupating into adult beetles by early summer.
Signs of White Grub Damage
White grub infestations are often mistaken for drought stress. If your lawn turns brown despite regular watering, or you notice patches of grass that lift easily from the soil, grubs may be the cause. Birds, skunks, or armadillos digging in your yard can also indicate grub activity.
- Irregular brown or dying patches in turfgrass.
- Turf feels spongy or lifts easily when pulled.
- Increased animal activity on the lawn.
- Visible white, C-shaped larvae beneath the soil surface.
