Over the decades of working to protect yards and trees we have come across some pretty interesting bugs. Identification is only the first step. We need to know their history, what they do and if they need controlled. The Palmetto Weevil (Rhynchophorus cruetatus) is one such pest. This pest was once considered to be a minor pest and wasn’t give much attention. Over the years a lot has been learned about this bug and why you need to keep an eye out for it.
What is the Palmetto Weevil?
Weevils are part of the beetle family. The identifying feature of weevils is a long snout like feature on their head called a rostrum. This protrusion actually has mandible or claw used to eat and dig. They do range in size and color. Some are solid black while others can be a reddish color with black spots. Size can vary from about 1” to over 3”.
The palmetto weevil that is found here is Florida can also be found in coastal South Carolina and coastal Texas. We some time refer some insects as invasive species. Usually referring to insects that are not native to the area. Fossil records show that this beetle has been in Florida for about 1 million years.
Is the Palmetto Weevil Bad?
If you own palm trees the answer is yes. Weevils in general feed on plant material. This is especially true for the larva as they are growing. Palmetto weevils can cause permanent damage to your palms. Usually by the time there is noticeable damage it’s too late for your tree. These little bugs will borrow holes in the plant flesh and lay eggs. As the larva grow and develop, they virtually eat the palm tree from the inside out. So, what can you do?
How Can I Stop These Beetles?
There is nothing you can do to stop them from enjoying your trees. What you need to be is vigilant in your own yard. We have mentioned in other articles about the need to keep an eye out for changes to your trees or yard. While we visit your property and check trees, plants and your yard, it always helps to have your help. If you notice insects you didn’t see before, or changes in the look of a plant, please bring it to our attention. With some insects, like these weevils, if they are caught early, we some options to control them.
