Brown Patch Grass Fungus

St. Augustine Grass Fungus or “Brown Patch” fungus is the cool season disease for our St. Augustine grasses. Over the summer months we deal with several different fungal diseases that most of our customers don’t even realize they have. Often the treatments are applied and damage never sets in. With Brown Patch fungus, we have our work cut out for us.

Brown Patch fungus season starts near the end of October. Once the temperature falls into the 60’s at night and once there has been a foggy morning or two, conditions are right! The symptoms of this fungus are circular brown areas that appear to have an orange ring on the outside edges. The brighter the orange color on the edges is how we determine how aggressive it is.

Once we identify this in your lawn, watering must stop! Your technician will generate a 2-3 week follow-up to check for recovery and re-treat as needed. At that point, your technician will advise you when to resume watering. Without reducing the watering schedule, the fungus becomes nearly impossible to eradicate even with our best fungicides.
